When explaining my investment model to a near 70-year-old who had never invested in his life, he asked me, with a doubtful voice, why I don't just live like a normal guy without all the risk. Out of respect I said nothing back, just nodded, hah yeah, why don't I.

What stayed with me was that we had completely different definitions of risk. He had slept peacefully on a 2.5% savings account for most of his life. No crashes, no red numbers, no bad years. I looked at the same thing and saw fifty years of another kind of risk. The same fifty years paid about 10,7% a year in the S&P 500.

Sometimes knowing more doesn't make the answer clearer. It just makes you see the cost of choices people were perfectly happy making. And maybe that's fine. Not everyone is trying to beat the beta.

2.5 %, no drama 10.7 %, the risky one 50 years
